Digital Skills Transformation Toolkit for a Resilient Labour Market

The World Economic Forum identified skills gaps in local labour markets as a main barrier to the adoption of new technologies in manufacturing. It predicted in 2020 that 40% of core skills will change within five years, putting pressure on manufacturing companies to reskill or upskill employees fast. The DiSTT project improves local skills in digital fabrication through innovative re- and upskilling programmes. Based on their tailored pilots, the partners create a new toolkit for the transformation of digital skills. The kit will include scalable guidance that can be transferred to fabrication labs or training organisations across Europe.

About the project

The DiSTT project prepares students and employees for the labor market of the 21st century. With knowledge of 3D printing and digital manufacturing, they can more easily succeed. The new DiSTT project, which started in May 2024, targets educational programs in FabLabs in five European countries - Czech Republic, Austria, Germany, Italy and Croatia. FabLabs are open workshops focused on the development and production of products with the help of computer-controlled production machines such as 3D printers, laser cutters or CNC milling machines. The project will offer six training and retraining programs to high school and university students, but also to employees or freelance creators with the aim of increasing their employment on the labor market.

Roadmap

1

Challenge

DiSTT project addresses the digital fabrication skills gap in Central Europe's industrial sectors, aligning skills with the evolving labour market needs. The digital transformation of the industry presents unprecedented challenges for the labour market. Yet, these challenges also offer an exceptional opportunity to revolutionize the manufacturing industry by bridging the skill gaps that have previously hindered technology adoption.

2

Main problem

The digital fabrication skills gaps of various groups (students, craftsmen, SME employees etc.) directly impact their employability and competitiveness in the evolving market.

3

Idea

Engaging informal educational facilities is advantageous for re/upskilling initiatives. These facilities, including FabLabs and makerspaces, are flexible and open to the public. They quickly adapt to technological changes and have the necessary equipment. Not only do these spaces meet all key requirements, but their existing networks also play a pivotal role. They are instrumental in addressing the manufacturing industry's skills gap.

4

Toolkit

The solutions delivered by the project are thoroughly piloted re/upskilling programs, tailored to the selected target groups. The finalized programs will be effectively disseminated through the “Digital Skills Transformation Toolkit”. DiSTT innovatively utilizes the existing FabLab Central Europe network for quick prototyping and joint piloting of re/upskilling programs.

5

Proof

As a result of the DiSTT project, at least 550 individuals and 18 SMEs of the target groups will directly benefit from the re/upskilling programs.

6

Toolkit for Europe

Each project partner will uptake the finalized toolkit, therefore upscaling their reach. The toolkit will be also uptaken by at least 24 other FabLabs or training-oriented organizations. Long-term the skill gap elimination will increase the region’s economic stability, strength and most importantly resilience.
