RE-PUBLIC SPACES

Project overview

REVITALISATION OF PUBLIC SPACES IN HISTORIC CITIES -adaptation of cities courtyards to climate change in Central Europe

Historic cities often find it difficult to become resilient to climate change. Especially in their centre, quartered buildings with internal courtyards need special attention while tools and policies for their adaptation are missing. The RE-PUBLIC SPACES project involves local communities and applies participatory methods in changing this. The partners develop a new methodology to analyse courtyards as a single spatial organism and prepare adaptation strategies that take account of specific climatic factors in each region. They test and evaluate these new strategies in local pilots and draft protocols and guidelines to guide public authorities dealing with the adaptation of courtyards.

Roadmap

1

Our Challenge

Adapting historic cities and urban public spaces to climate change is a necessity, and building their resilience is one of the EU's policy priorities. Historic centres consist of quartered buildings with internal courtyards, the aftermath of the art of building over the centuries. These are often excluded spaces. There is a need for solutions on a societal level, as well as legislative and organisational measures. To date, there is a lack of tools and policies for this type of space and the revitalisation processes undertaken do not sufficiently take into account the specificities of adapting this type of space to climate change.

2

Our Approach

The RE-PUBLIC SPACES project focuses on historic cities in Central Europe, with 4 investments in courtyard revitalizations in Pinerolo (Italy SHIELDING THE SPACE TO REDUCE TEMPERATURE (HEAT ISLAND REDUCTION)), Velenje (Slovenia INTRODUCING GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE TO REDUCE TEMPERATURES (HEAT ISLAND REDUCTION), Łódź (Poland RAINWATER MANAGEMENT), and Osijek (Croatia INTRODUCTION OF BLUE WATER INFRASTRUCTURE TO REDUCE TEMPERATURES (HEAT ISLAND REDUCTION)). Each city will address specific regional challenges of climat.

3

Our Solutions

The project RE-PUBLIC SPACES aims to develop strategies for adapting courtyards to climate change, involving local communities and creating a methodology tailored to regional climates. Results will include 4 revitalization models, 4 protocols, and 1 guidelines for climate adaptation, 1 charter benefiting cities across the EU. Project work plan: • Wp1 - Climate change adaptation of courtyard spaces in historic cities – strategies: 1 joint methodology, 4 climate changes adaptation strategies for courtyards in historic cities • Wp2 - Revitalisation to climate change of historic courtyards – pilot implementations: 4 revitalization of courtyards • Wp3 - Bioclimatic revitalization of historic courtyards- solutions: 4 protocols, 1 guidlines, 1 charter
