The Weinviertel is a wine-growing region, combining cultural heritage with scenic landscapes. It is located mainly in Austria but extends into the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
The subsurface equivalent is the Vienna Basin, which is a geologically young tectonic burial and sedimentary basin in the seam area between Alps, Carpathians and Pannonian Plain.
The Vienna Basin’s hydrocarbon production began in the early 20th century, with major development after World War II. The region became a significant Central European energy source, peaking mid-century, and continues modest production today. Across the three countries, many hydrocarbon wells could be repurposed for geothermal applications.
