The Romea Strata was an important European route, travelled by pilgrims from Central and Eastern Europe on their way to Rome: from the Baltic Sea they crossed Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Czech Republic and Austria until they crossed the Alps and entered the north-east of Italy through the town of Tarvisio. Nowadays Italian’s Association Europe Romea Strata working on its restoration which can brings several advantages for different regions in mentioned states. Firstly, it can bring opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises in rural areas, secondly development of slow and responsible tourism and thirdly, restoration and conservation of historical heritage. Together with partners from Fondazione Homo Viator, we have been looking for ways to use the restoration of this route in the Czech Republic to build capacity in tourism.
