iiSBE Italia R&D is a non-profit organization. Its thematic competencies belong to the field of methodologies and tools for the sustainability and resilience assessment of the built environment. iiSBE Italia R&D’s main business is the participation in EU research and cooperation projects: over the last seven years, iiSBE Italia R&D participated as a partner in more than ten projects; all the projects’ outcomes (assessment systems, methodologies, tools, etc.) are made available to public authorities and other interested stakeholders as open-source resources. Participating as a partner in several European projects, iiSBE Italia R&D developed new assessment tools for the urban scale (Sustainable Neighbourhoods Tool, Interreg MED “CESBA MED – Sustainable Cities” project) and for the territorial scale (Sustainable Territories Tools, Interreg Alpine Space “CESBA Alps: Sustainable Territories” project).

Considering the urgent relevance of the challenges posed by climate change, iiSBE  Italia R&D has more recently addressed the development of a new generation of assessment tools for the evaluation of the resilience and adaptation level at building, urban and territorial scale, named Resilient Built Environment Tools (projects Interreg Alcotra “Habit.A” and “ARTACLIM”). The innovation of the RBE Tools has been recognized by the UN Environment, which hosted a presentation at the GlobalABC Pavilion in Glasgow during COP26.

In this framework, being part of the SuPeRBE consortium will allow iiSBE Italia R&D to increase resilience to climate change risks by contributing to the development of innovative methods and tools to implement high-impact and effective adaptation and risk management measures at different spatial scales. Furthermore, iiSBE Italia is part of the global iiSBE network (international initiative for a Sustainable Built Environment). iiSBE is the organization that developed one of the most well-known transnational sustainability assessment tools, the SBTool (Sustainable  Building Tool). Contextualized versions of SBTool generated national assessment systems, including the Italian one: Protocollo ITACA. Protocollo ITACA is the official building assessment tool of the Conference of the Italian Regions, and it is also an Italian technical standard (UNI PdR13). iiSBE Italia led the development of Protocollo ITACA.
