The Centre for Social Innovation (ZSI) is a private non-university research centre with 30 years of experience in conceptualising, implementing and coordinating international research projects under various funding schemes, including the Framework Programmes for Research and Technological Development (e.g., Horizon Europe) and INTERREG (incl. Central Europe). With its unique focus on research and application projects, ZSI explores the social impact of all types of innovations, playing a key role in fostering sustainable, socially accepted changes. This inclusive approach to entrepreneurship lies at the heart of ZSI’s mission, where social, economic, and environmental dimensions intersect to create holistic solutions.

ZSI’s Expertise in Social Innovation

Founded as the oldest institution dedicated to social innovation, ZSI has developed extensive competencies in both theory and practice. Its expertise spans innovation processes in general but excels in social innovation in particular. The Centre emphasizes the role of innovation not just as a driver of economic growth, but as a tool for improving the quality of life and ensuring inclusivity across all sectors of society. By addressing systemic barriers to participation, ZSI ensures that innovation serves the needs of diverse populations, particularly those traditionally excluded from entrepreneurial opportunities.

Key Contributions: A Legacy of Innovation

ZSI’s influence extends far beyond research; it actively contributes to the creation of frameworks and resources that shape the future of social innovation globally. Among its key contributions is the European School of Social Innovation (ESSI), which nurtures the next generation of social innovators by providing a platform for knowledge exchange, capacity building, and collaborative problem-solving. ESSI’s educational initiatives include a Master’s program and online courses that are designed to equip learners with the necessary skills to develop sustainable social enterprises and foster inclusive entrepreneurship.

Another cornerstone of ZSI’s work is the Atlas of Social Innovation, a comprehensive resource that offers deep insights into global social innovation ecosystems. The Atlas serves as a scientific reference for policymakers, practitioners, and academics alike, helping them understand the role of social innovations in meeting global challenges such as climate change, inequality, and social exclusion.

Promoting Inclusive Entrepreneurship

At its core, ZSI’s work supports the democratization of entrepreneurship. By removing systemic barriers to innovation, it creates opportunities for marginalized communities to engage in entrepreneurial activities. Through its various projects and scientific conferences, ZSI provides platforms for networking and collaboration among diverse groups of innovators. These initiatives encourage the inclusion of all societal groups in innovation processes, ensuring that solutions are co-created with the people they aim to benefit.
