The team from the Slovenian Environment Agency participated in the Drought Resilience +10 conference, held from September 30 to October 2, 2024, at the World Meteorological Organization’s headquarters in Geneva. This significant event brought together nearly 1,000 participants, including over 280 attendees in person and more than 680 joining virtually from 123 countries, all acknowledging the urgent need to tackle the global challenge of drought.
The conference marked a decade since the High-Level Meeting on National Drought Policies, providing valuable insights and strategies for effective drought management. Participants assessed advancements made over the past ten years in drought preparedness, response, and adaptation, while exploring new, knowledge-based approaches and innovative solutions. A key focus was the transition from reactive crisis management to proactive measures, such as utilizing seasonal forecasts and anticipatory tools for action, including innovative financing mechanisms.
The ARSO team played an active role in Workstream 3, which concentrated on Drought Impact Monitoring, Assessment, and Forecasting. They showcased key activities and outcomes also from the Clim4Cast project, emphasizing its contributions to enhancing drought resilience strategies.
The outcomes of this conference will serve as a foundation for high-level discussions at the upcoming 16th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP-16) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), scheduled for December 2024 in Riyadh.
