The BIOECO-UP project also focuses on the transnational testing of innovative bio-based products using the Living Lab approach. This activity enables companies to gather external input for their product development and explore open innovation and user-driven innovation practises with people. The activities are structured as real-life experiments that support the active participation of users and where their needs and perceptions serve as valuable input for business development. This approach is particularly beneficial for start-ups and SMEs as it helps them gain insights into new markets, expand their business networks and improve product innovation through co-creation.

In this context, three tests of bio-based products were carried out in Slovenia. The activities were led by the Institute for Sustainable Development in co-operation with the Biotechnical Faculty of the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. Each test focused on refining different aspects of product development, from upcycled oil pastels to silkworm cocoons and fermented soya bread spreads. In each case, relevant stakeholders — including potential users, business representatives and industry experts — participated in the testing process. The different frameworks of the Living Labs and the targeted selection of participants played a key role in generating constructive and actionable insights.

The co-operative business model for silkworm farming was met with interest and various options for open collaboration were discussed. The soya spread test resulted in enthusiastic feedback from a wider audience and many insights were also gained through the questionnaires. The oil pastels test benefited from both informal interactions with children and parents at a public event and a focussed discussion with a select group of stakeholders. In all three tests, the Living Lab approach proved effective as the interactive sessions were instrumental in gaining useful insights for improving the products and positioning them for future market success.
