Cracow District Heating Company in Krakow (MPEC) is one of Poland’s heating industry leaders. The Company, established in 1953, is one of the key municipal companies in Krakow, currently providing heat for over 65 percent of the city’s residents. In terms of size, it is the second heating system in Poland, while in terms of technological solutions, the Krakow system is at the forefront of systems operated in our country. The heat from the city’s network, currently 940 kilometres long (almost 70 percent of which are pre-insulated pipes made in the latest technology) goes to housing estates, shopping malls, congress halls, offices, schools, hospitals and churches. Pre-insulated pipelines equipped with an alarm system are constantly remotely monitored, which allows identification of possible uncontrolled water leaks. Heat is provided from two CHP Plants and one Eco-Incineration Plant and is supplied from the heating network through almost 11,000 connection nodes installed at the recipients.
The clean and safe energy of Krakow provided by MPEC – apart from central heating – is also used for other technological purposes, such as air conditioning and ventilation. Thanks to the expansion of the city’s district heating network in recent years, the Company has contributed to eliminating more than 5,000 coal-fired furnaces. The environmentally friendly heat from MPEC has even reached the heart of the city – Krakow’s Main Square, where it heats the Sukiennice and the City Hall Tower. The city’s district heating network now encircles almost the entire historic centre of Krakow: from the Main Square to the edges of the city.
MPEC is interested in strong involvement in implementation of project results. Working with HEAT 35 partners will help to design possible transformation solutions for Krakow’s district heating system, providing residents with clean, green and reliable energy in their homes. The exchange of information between partners, dealing with similar problems on a daily basis, will accelerate the necessary transformation.
