In September 2024, the FOODCITIZENS project held three interactive workshops focused on food provision and consumption in Vienna, aimed at refugees and migrants. The workshops, hosted at various food-related venues in the 10th district, engaged 18 participants from diverse countries, who shared their experiences and challenges related to accessing affordable, fresh, and culturally appropriate food. Each workshop featured hands-on activities, including photo diaries, food mapping, and group discussions, offering participants a chance to explore food barriers, taste preferences, and language difficulties. Key outcomes included the creation of a supportive network for sharing food-related resources and tips, especially around affordable grocery shopping and familiar food options. Participants also highlighted challenges such as limited food choices in refugee shelters and the emotional impact of not being able to choose food freely. The workshops have set the stage for future policy recommendations and community-driven solutions, with additional steps including a policy lab in November 2024 and public food walks in December 2024.
