Electronic waste is among the fastest-growing environmental challenges, with its disposal leading to severe impacts on nature and the climate. The CIRCOTRONIC project, launched in the Košice region by the Agency for the Support of Regional Development Košice, n.o., and supported by European partners, offers innovative solutions to make the production of electronic devices more sustainable. The primary goal is to integrate circular economy principles into the manufacturing and processing of electronics, thereby reducing waste and emissions while supporting the local economy.
Testing Circular Tools (Quick Scan Circular Business Models, Circularity Assessment Tool, CircitNorden Circular Assessment Tool, CircularSupplyChain workshop tool)
Within the CIRCOTRONIC project, circular tools will be piloted by companies in Slovakia. This phase involves analyzing existing company processes to identify ways to reduce waste, use raw materials more efficiently, and optimize energy usage. Slovak companies participating in the pilot will gain hands-on experience with tools designed to enhance production processes and facilitate the transition to sustainable business practices. This initiative aligns with the EU’s broader commitment to promoting the green transformation of industry and resource management.
Pilot Testing with INCIEN and AfB Slovakia s.r.o.
A key collaborator in the pilot phase is the Circular Economy Institute (INCIEN), which has a long history of helping companies adopt circular practices. The project also includes a partnership with AfB Slovakia s.r.o., an organization specializing in refurbishing IT equipment.
AfB Slovakia s.r.o. Case Study
AfB Slovakia provides an exemplary model of circular economy in action. The company collects used hardware from various businesses, securely shreds data, and reintroduces refurbished devices to the market. Through this IT remarketing process, AfB Slovakia not only conserves natural resources but also significantly reduces harmful emissions associated with producing new devices.
Beyond its environmental impact, AfB Slovakia is distinguished by its inclusive employment approach, as it actively hires individuals with disabilities.
