Lublin Schools Shine in “WEEE Lives” Recycling Competition

LUBLIN, December 16, 2024 — The Arena Lublin stadium was abuzz with excitement as students, educators, and city officials gathered to celebrate the winners of the pilot “WEEE Lives” campaign, a competition dedicated to collecting small-sized waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), as a part of the Circular WEEEP project. The event marked a significant milestone in promoting environmental awareness among young residents of Lublin.

The ceremony brought together pupils from the winning classes, school principals, and esteemed guests, including Deputy Mayor of Lublin, Mr. Tomasz Fulara, and representatives from the Department of Environmental Protection and the Department of European Funds.

The competition showcased the efforts of Lublin’s schools in addressing the growing challenge of electronic waste. The results were impressive, with students demonstrating a strong commitment to recycling and sustainability.

The winners of the competition were:

  1. First Place: Class VC, Primary School No. 51, ul. Bursztynowa 22
  2. Second Place: Class VID, Primary School No. 51, ul. Bursztynowa 22
  3. Third Place: Class VIIB, Primary School No. 31, ul. Lotnicza 1

The pupils from these classes were rewarded with Sony headphones, a recognition of their collective effort and dedication to environmental stewardship.

In addition to individual class awards, a special distinction was awarded to Primary School No. 31, ul. Lotnicza 1. The school received an Eco Station—containers designed to facilitate effective waste segregation, further enhancing their environmental initiatives.

Deputy Mayor Fulara applauded the schools’ efforts, stating, “This competition highlights the importance of educating our youth about environmental issues. By involving students in hands-on initiatives like WEEE Lives, we’re fostering a culture of responsibility and sustainability that will benefit future generations.”

The “WEEE Lives” pilot is part of a broader push to address the challenges posed by electronic waste, a rapidly growing problem worldwide. By encouraging schools to collect and responsibly dispose of small electronic devices, the initiative seeks to instill sustainable habits in the city’s youngest residents.

As the ceremony concluded, attendees left inspired by the students’ achievements and Lublin’s schools’ commitment to a cleaner, greener future. With the success of this pilot campaign, hopes are high for expanding the initiative in the coming years.
