The EPoSS Annual Forum 2024, held at the Tyndall National Institute in Cork, brought together the European Smart Systems community for an inspiring three-day event under the theme “Sensing the Future of Smart Systems: Bridging Minds and Microelectronics.” The forum served as a vibrant platform for exchanging ideas and showcasing the latest advancements in microelectronics, sensor technologies, and sustainable innovation.

Throughout the event, participants engaged in high-level discussions on state-of-the-art research and emerging trends in the field. Technical sessions offered deep insights into advanced manufacturing technologies, energy-efficient solutions, and the shift toward green smart systems. Attendees also had the opportunity to learn from pioneering startups competing in the forum’s innovation challenge, while over 30 poster pitches and multiple company showcases presented real-world applications and ongoing research efforts. Guided visits to local research and development facilities further enriched the program, giving participants a closer look at the science behind the innovations.

A key message that emerged from the event was the growing emphasis on sustainability. The optimization of manufacturing processes through the integration of cutting-edge technologies was highlighted as essential for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and minimizing electronic waste. One particularly thought-provoking concept involved the use of paper as a primary material in the electronics of the future—an example that captured the imagination of many and underlined the industry’s shift toward circular innovation.

SMART CIRCUIT was prominently represented at the forum through the introduction of the Circular Innovation Academy (CIA), which was presented to a wide audience of industrial leaders, researchers, and future partners. The presentation sparked strong interest, particularly among potential Circular Value Ecosystem (CiVE) stakeholders. This positive reception laid the groundwork for future collaboration and signaled an important milestone in the development of the Academy.

In the wake of the event, follow-up actions will focus on building relationships with the interested parties and aligning the Academy’s roadmap with the strategic goals discussed during the forum. The insights gained in Cork reinforced the importance of multi-disciplinary cooperation and holistic approaches when designing digital solutions for a sustainable production landscape. As the EPoSS community continues to shape the future of smart systems, events like this one reaffirm the critical role of innovation in achieving Europe’s green and digital transformation.
