The organizing teams—Zukunftshaus, Radius, and the German Environment Agency—are delighted to announce Würzburg’s very first bicycle-powered cinema, as part of the NiCE local pilot closing event!

On May 10th, 2025, the inspiring and Oscar-winning animated film Flow will be screened in the theatre hall of the Erlöserschwestern (Sisters of the Redeemer). The film invites audiences on a captivating journey through stunning aquatic and animal worlds, where diverse creatures come together to face the challenges of a transforming environment. Flow features no anthropomorphized dialogue, and yet brims with emotion, making it a cinematic highlight for both young and old.

The bicycle cinema offers a unique opportunity to experience firsthand what it means to generate energy not from a wall socket, but through one’s own muscle power. Volunteers from the audience will take turns pedaling on provided bicycles to power the screening, while the rest enjoy the film from conventional seating.

The bicycle cinema marks the official conclusion of the local pilot phase in Würzburg and celebrates the dedication of all involved. Visitors will also have the opportunity to learn more about the NiCE project and to participate in a public survey.

Furthermore, before and after the film, there will be lively, danceable live music performed by members of the Global Groove Orchestra.

The event will take place in the theatre hall of the Erlöserschwestern (Bibrastraße 6, Würzburg), which accommodates up to 100 guests. The program begins at 7:00 p.m., with admission starting at 6:30 p.m. and closing promptly at 7:00 p.m. or once all seats are filled.

Snacks and drinks will be available for purchase on site. Admission is free; however, donations to help cover costs are warmly welcomed.

Background Information on the Event:

This event is part of the EU-funded project NiCE – from niche to centre, supported by Interreg Central Europe with co-financing from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). NiCE addresses the transformation of urban centres brought about by the climate crisis, the rise of online commerce, and the lasting effects of the pandemic. The project seeks to harness these changes as opportunities to revitalize city centres through sustainable innovations.

Coordinated by the German Environment Agency, NiCE brings together nine project partners from eight countries. Zukunftshaus participates as a practical partner and, in collaboration with Würzburg’s bicycle courier Radius, the think tank adelphi, and the Environment Agency, has developed and tested a delivery service for rental and repair items.
