The Sustainability Circle 2024, held on September 12, 2024, in Freiburg, united industry leaders, SMEs, and sustainability advocates to tackle one of the most pressing issues of our time: advancing the circular economy. 70 participants, including online attendees, engaged in a day full of innovation-driven discussions centered around sustainability, digitization, and the future of European SMEs.

The day opened with a networking session, followed by presentations from key figures in the sector, such as Dr. Thomas Fischer of Deutsche Institute für Textil- und Faserforschung, who explored circular economy principles in the textile industry. A series of masterclasses from experts like Günter Grabher of Smart Textiles Platform Austria and Alberto Landini from Stam S.r.l. provided deep insights into smart textile solutions and innovations driving a sustainable future.

Among the highlights was the introduction of the Climate Coaches and Circular Value Transformation Engineers (CiVE), who are essential in helping medium-sized enterprises navigate the twin transformation of sustainability and digitization. SMEs shared inspiring case studies on practical sustainability applications in their industries, providing tangible examples of the twin transition in action.

The event also featured a lively World Café where participants brainstormed solutions and exchanged ideas on themes like AI, IT security, energy, and production. With a virtual café running simultaneously, online participants were equally engaged in the discussions.

A panel discussion moderated by Dr. Christine Neuy brought European experts together to share tools and methods for overcoming challenges in implementing circular economy strategies in SMEs.

The Sustainability Circle concluded with closing remarks and a networking session, leaving attendees inspired and equipped with fresh ideas to drive sustainable transformation in their sectors.
