Sustainability in Horizontal and Vertical Supply Chains

Location: Pordenone, Italy
Date: 27.06.2024
On June 27, 2024, the event “Sostenibilità nelle Filiere Orizzontali e Verticali” was held at the Polo Tecnologico Alto Adriatico in Pordenone and simultaneously broadcast online, bringing together key players from academia, business, and innovation networks. Organized by Strategia & Controllo, in collaboration with COMET and as part of the broader SMART CIRCUIT initiative, the event focused on the urgent need to integrate sustainability into every layer of supply chain management.

The discussion centered around the growing relevance of environmental and social responsibility in how goods and services are sourced, produced, and delivered. Experts presented both strategic frameworks and real-world applications, offering attendees a comprehensive view of how sustainable practices are reshaping supply chains across industries. The program particularly emphasized the challenges and opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which are often at the heart of regional economies but face unique hurdles in meeting evolving compliance standards.

Professor Marco Fasan of Università Ca’ Foscari opened the conversation by laying out the governance principles that should guide sustainability strategies. His talk was followed by Lucio Dalla Pozza from Anteo Srl, who reflected on how resilience and adaptability are key traits in a sustainable supply network. Cristian Paravano from Gatto Group brought in an applied perspective, sharing his company’s journey toward more responsible supply chain operations. Michela Ceccotti from Sultan Srl focused on SMEs, offering practical advice on how smaller companies can align with sustainability criteria without overextending their resources.

In his closing remarks, Sergio Barel, Chairman of Cluster COMET, reinforced the importance of long-term commitment to these themes, not just as a regulatory necessity but as a strategic advantage for innovation-driven growth. He also emphasized the pivotal role of local ecosystems in supporting this transition, a goal that aligns directly with the mission of the SMART CIRCUIT project.

This gathering marked the beginning of a series of conversations that COMET and its partners intend to continue well beyond the lifespan of the project. By fostering an open dialogue and knowledge exchange around sustainability and the circular economy, the initiative aims to provide a foundation for a more resilient and future-ready industrial landscape across the region.
