The second SMART CIRCUIT Town Hall organised by FB , held in Eisenstadt on June 18, 2024, gathered a focused group of stakeholders to explore how smart construction practices, circular economy principles, and educational innovation can shape the next major flagship project under the SMART CIRCUIT initiative.

Bringing together experts from construction, public authorities, and innovation-driven institutions, the event focused on practical applications of Building Information Modeling (BIM), smart materials, and the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) concept. The goal: to co-develop a bold, forward-thinking project concept that reflects the most pressing needs and future directions of the construction industry.

  • Opening Remarks: Introduced by FB representatives, the session set the stage for interdisciplinary collaboration and regional innovation.
  • Regional Insights: Land Burgenland shared updates on key infrastructure projects related to energy, water, and climate resilience, identifying circular construction as a strategic priority.
  • Best Practices: MCR presented a selection of impactful EU-funded construction projects, including ReBuilt, WOODCIRCLES, and Reincarnate, offering inspiration and models for transnational collaboration.
  • Technology Focus: FB introduced the potential of BIM for optimizing building lifecycle processes, from planning and design to operation and deconstruction.
  • Education & Skills: FH Joanneum presented the STEAM Academy concept, emphasizing its importance in preparing future professionals for green and digital transitions in construction.

Achievements of the Event:

  • Strengthened understanding of emerging construction trends, with a clear emphasis on sustainability, circularity, and digital tools.
  • Mapped out potential flagship project themes, including advanced applications of BIM, integration of bio-based and recycled smart materials, and STEAM-driven educational initiatives.

Next Steps & Follow-Up Actions:

  1. Project Development: The FB team will continue developing the flagship concept, aligning it with stakeholder input and upcoming EU funding opportunities.
  2. EU Collaboration: Regional stakeholders will monitor relevant EU calls to identify synergies and prepare for proposal submission.
  3. Future Engagement: The next Town Hall is scheduled for September 2024, with the aim of expanding collaboration to regions across the Southern Axis, enhancing cross-border partnerships and shaping the European construction agenda.
