On Monday, 4th November, the mayors of Szombathely and its surroundings were present, and on 30 October, the training sessions on protection and security continued with the leaders of the municipalities of Kลszeg and its surroundings.
At the forum, Pรฉter Kiss, Fire Lieutenant Colonel, Civil Protection Supervisor, said in his presentation that in June 2024, a cyclone hit Vas County and at the same time the district of Kลszeg, which caused the surface water bodies to flood due to the geomorphological characteristics of the area. The varied surface of the district is favourable to the development of local water hazards, which can occur at the most unexpected times and places. This year, for example, there were three cases of water damage in Horvรกtzsidรกny, but there were also many cases in the villages of Kลszeghegyalja where volunteers were needed. This was also the case during the damage mitigation operations following Cyclone Boris in September. The strongest wind speeds in the county were recorded in Kลszeg. The gale-force winds were followed by falling trees. These damage events require a timely response, and prevention is the most important tool. For this reason, the Directorate’s role and objective in the LOCALIENCE project is to develop resilience to the hazards of extreme weather events at local level.
