We are pleased to announce that construction has officially started at the Tivoli retention-infiltration test site in Ljubljana, implemented by JP VOKA SNAGA d.o.o., a partner of the MAURICE project.

The test site is located in Tivoli Park, a well-known green space near the centre of Ljubljana. This area was carefully selected for its strategic importance: it lies within a water protection zone and is representative of many urban areas facing challenges related to impermeable surfaces, stormwater runoff, and climate change.

The aim of the pilot site is to demonstrate how natural solutions—such as infiltration and retention systems—can help cities better manage rainwater. The site will allow water to soak into the ground in a controlled way, instead of overloading the sewer system or running off into nearby streams and rivers. Over time, this helps protect groundwater, reduce urban flooding, and improve the resilience of the city’s water management system.

The site is equipped with various features that will help collect and guide rainwater, allowing experts to monitor how water behaves under different conditions. The data gathered will be used to improve future planning and guide investment in sustainable drainage systems—not just in Ljubljana, but also in other cities with similar conditions.

This pilot site is part of a broader effort within the MAURICE project to support nature-based solutions for urban water management. By combining science, practical experience, and local engagement, the project aims to develop strategies that are both technically sound and environmentally responsible.

As construction progresses, we will regularly share updates, photos, and insights from the site. The Tivoli test site marks an important milestone on the path to more climate-resilient and sustainable cities in Central Europe.
