On Monday, September 16th, the Public Institution of Kamenjak hosted the first thematic workshop of the HUMANITA project as part of its 20th anniversary celebrations, where the project and its accomplishments to date were presented. The event served as an opportunity to showcase the project’s goals, current results, and future plans to the local community. The workshop featured insightful presentations from distinguished biologists from the University of Osijek’s Department of Biology, Dr. Davorka K. Hackenberger and Dr. Branimir K. Hackenberger, who provided valuable insights into the ecological importance of Kamenjak.
Earthworms and Ecological Monitoring in HUMANITA
Dr. Davorka K. Hackenberger introduced the audience to her research on the role of earthworms in maintaining Kamenjak’s ecosystems, particularly focusing on the endemic species Octodrilus istrianus. She highlighted how the HUMANITA project is using this research to better understand the effects of microplastic pollution on soil health and local fauna. This study, conducted in collaboration with external experts, will continue to be a crucial component of the project’s efforts to protect Kamenjak’s delicate ecosystems.
Progress and Future Plans of the HUMANITA Project
Dr. Branimir K. Hackenberger followed with an overview of the biological and ecological values of Kamenjak. His presentation emphasized how the HUMANITA project is addressing the impacts of tourism and pollution on the area’s biodiversity. The event was an opportunity to present the project’s current achievements, such as monitoring the fragmentation of Mediterranean grasslands, tracking the effects of macroplastic pollution on the coast, and engaging the public in participatory monitoring of invasive species. His talk focused on the unique biological and ecological values of Kamenjak, the effects of human activities on its landscape, and the importance of integrating the local community in conservation efforts and sustainable tourism initiatives.
