On December 5, 2024, the beautiful Rathaus in Quedlinburg hosted an important meeting for the European project ZEB4ZEN – Zero Energy Buildings for Zero Energy Neighbourhoods. The event brought together experts and partners from four UNESCO cities to discuss the future of renewable energy and sustainable solutions for Europe’s historical centers.

Key Topics Discussed:

  • Quedlinburg (Germany), in collaboration with the University of Magdeburg-Stendal, shared progress on analyzing solutions for heat pumps and photovoltaic systems, focusing on sustainable integration within heritage areas.
  • Karlovac (Croatia) provided updates on its pilot project, which involves installing heat pumps and solar systems in a model neighbourhood.
  • Palmanova (Italy) presented its vision for creating a solar energy community outside the city’s historical boundaries, ensuring a sustainable energy supply for the historic center.
  • Zamość (Poland) introduced an innovative internal insulation system for historic buildings, developed with the support of Lublin University of Technology.

Shared Objective: to develop transferable methodologies and digital platforms to simulate, test, and evaluate energy-saving and CO₂ reduction measures in historical contexts. This approach bridges modern technology and tradition to safeguard cultural heritage while advancing the energy transition.

A special thanks to the Mayor of Quedlinburg for hosting the event and contributing to the discussions.
