Since July 9, 2017, Palmanova has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site – the 53rd Italian site on the list. Since 2018, one of the most beautiful boroughs in Italy. Palmanova today is a municipality with 5,400 inhabitants that bets on tourism and culture, is open to Europe, and wants to become a Fortress City built for war, a city for Peace. The Fortress is restricted under an urban planning and architectural point of view to preserve its originality and uniqueness. This is a great challenge when historical protection must be combined with the need to embrace new technologies to support the environment and clean energy.
With the ZEB4ZEB project, we will seek the best solution for this challenge: guarantee citizens’ access to clean energy sources, such as photovoltaic energy, while protecting the city’s panorama. The aim is to create a Renewable Energy Community (REC) by positioning solar panels outside the historic centre in an unproductive area for the benefit of the inhabitants of the historic centre. In this way, we will help citizens be protagonists of the energy transition.
