On September 11, 2024, the Westpannon Team presented the interim results of the Iron Curtain Trail Central Europe (ICTr-CE) project during an expert workshop in Gdansk, Poland. The workshop was organized by the Pomorski Tourism Board as part of the Baltic Bike Upgrade (BBU) project, under the Interreg South Baltic Programme.

The popular cycling route along the Baltic Sea in Poland and Germany, a joint section of EuroVelo 10 and EuroVelo 13, was a key focus of the discussions. Given the relevance of the ICTr-CE project to this region, its findings have significant implications for the BBU project and can contribute to its successful implementation. The workshop brought together a diverse group of participants, including BBU project partners, cycling professionals, and tourism service providers from across EuroVelo 10.

During the workshop, the European Cyclists’ Federation (ECF) provided valuable insights into EuroVelo 10, sharing data on website visitor numbers and the infrastructural background of both EuroVelo 10 and EuroVelo 13. In addition, a general overview of the BBU project and its objectives was presented, along with the initial results of a survey conducted by project partners.

Following a brief intermission, attendees had the opportunity to learn from Danish experiences regarding necessary service improvements to enhance cycling friendliness. The workshop also included an update on the current status of EuroVelo 10 in Sweden, where certified route inspectors are actively surveying several cycling routes.

The day concluded with a guided cycling tour along the joint section of EuroVelo 10 and EuroVelo 13 between Gdansk and Sopot. Participants enjoyed the opportunity to experience firsthand the high-quality infrastructure of this popular segment of the Iron Curtain Trail.

This event underscored the importance of continued cooperation and knowledge exchange in the successful implementation of transnational projects like ICTr-CE and BBU. By building on each other’s achievements, partners can ensure that these initiatives further develop and promote cycling tourism across Europe.
