Strengthening Food Security in Cities – Insights from Kraków

Date: 06.03.2025
On March 6, Kraków became a center of discussion on the future of food security in urban areas. The conference “Taste of Security: Food and Quality of Life in the City in Times of Crisis” brought together experts, local government officials, and practitioners to address key challenges and opportunities related to urban and peri-urban food systems.

The event focused on sustainable agriculture, supply chains, and collaboration among stakeholders to ensure food resilience in the face of climate change and global crises. Participants had the opportunity to engage with leading experts, including Paulina Sobiesiak-Penszko and Katarzyna Banul from the Institute for Food Strategies “Grunt.” They shared valuable insights into best practices, innovative distribution models, and strategies for fostering community-driven food security solutions.

One of the significant outcomes of the conference was the signing of the Declaration on Food Security, reinforcing the commitment to building stable, accessible, and sustainable local food systems. This initiative aligns with Kraków’s recent decision to join the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact, a global network dedicated to strengthening urban food resilience. The city is now actively developing strategies such as green public procurement and urban farming to enhance local food production and distribution.

The conference was organized as part of the CoFarm4Cities project, an initiative supported by the Interreg Central Europe Program 2021-2027. The discussions and knowledge exchanged during the event will contribute to shaping effective food policies and practical solutions for urban food security.

The organizers extend their gratitude to all participants for their valuable contributions. The event marked an important step toward creating a more resilient, sustainable, and food-secure future for cities across Central Europe.
