After the Explorer Tour Central in June of 2024, two additional explorer tours were successfully organized related to the pilot areas of the ICTr-CE project during the summer period in 2024. The main aims of the bicycle tours were to test the (cycle) tourism-related services along EuroVelo 13 (The Iron Curtain Trail) and to promote these destinations.
We are delighted to share with you that the Unbound Traveler, Naomi and Violin, Romanian travel influencers, successfully cycled the distance between Szentgotthárd (Hungary) and Villány (Hungary), visiting Slovenian and Croatian territories as well. Over the course of the trip, between the 27th of August and the 2nd of September 2024, the participants visited the Iron Curtain-related sites and gave detailed feedback on their experiences regarding the attractions and the tourism services.
We have designed the Explorer Tour South to capture the true essence of the region. During the 8-day tour, TuristulLiber visited the Iron Curtain Trail Museum in Apátistvánfalva and in Lovászi Iron Curtain Museum and bunkers, where they learned more about the history and division of people and countries due to the Iron Curtain. Another stop was made at the Friendship Memorial Park near Bödeháza, as the name of the park says it commemorates old and new friendships, the creation of which demonstrates the strength and the unity of the community living there. A boat ride on the Drava River will take them from Brodic to Križnica where they saw the pristine nature and listen to the wild birds. Iron Curtain Trail also passes the destination of the Amazon of Europe which is the first 5-country biosphere reserve in Europe protected under UNESCO.
A travel article was published about the trip, which can be found here (https://www.unboundtraveler.com/blog/holiday/eurovelo13-7-days-on-the-longest-cycling-route-in-europe/), while a video available: here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysUwux1qklE)

In conclusion, the Iron Curtain Trail tour is more than just a cycling expedition; it can be a transformative journey that combines the beauty of nature with historical reflection, cultural engagement, and personal growth. We hope to continue promoting such initiatives that foster sustainable travel, cultural exchange, and environmental stewardship. We look forward to future collaborations and to further exploring the endless possibilities that the Iron Curtain Trail offers to all those who seek to experience Europe’s rich heritage through the lens of cycling tourism.
