Project overview
Multi-dimensional and cross-territorial governance model for activation of the World War I heritage to foster sustainable socio-economic development of remote territories of Central Europe
Central Europe has a vast cultural heritage related to World War I with significant potential to accelerate socio-economic development in rural areas. However, the joint management of this heritage remains challenging as it is dispersed across various countries and lacks a cohesive strategy for preservation and utilisation. The GOV4PeaCE project establishes a joint vision for managing the war-related cultural heritage across borders and sectors. The project tests innovative approaches to museum concepts, cross-border heritage routes, and intersectoral cooperation to make better use of the past heritage for future development.

Roadmap
Why we are here?
World War I heritage, together with its common identity, cohesion provides great socio-economic potential. This heritage is widely spread along former war fronts, which today encompass different countries, regions and communities in the border and remote rural territories between Italy, Slovenia and Austria, Poland and Slovakia, Hungary as well as beyond. These areas create trans-regional and cross-border functional territories which unite and integrate people despite national borders.
Specific problem
WWI heritage, due to its fragmentation and absence of governance structures, enable cross-territorial and multi-sectoral cooperation. That limited capacity to manage the WWI heritage holds back the integrated territorial development. As it covers the areas facing demographic decline, brain drain, population ageing – the effective management of the historic and cultural heritage could be the factor boosting the socio-economic development.
Our idea
What if we develop unique and united governance model of WWI heritage which will improve its use and effectively strengthen the cross-border cooperation and regional/local development?
Our solution
We want to overcome complex territorial and sectoral barriers in WWI heritage governance which hinder its socio-economic activation for the integrated development of remote Central Europe territories where major WWI frontlines took place and its heritage remains untapped.
How will it work?
Following an innovative multi- dimensional and cross-territorial WWI heritage governance model, we intend to set up sustainable governance structures and tools to trigger WWI heritage valorization within and across functional territories.
