Project overview

Green mobility solutions for Pioneering Actions Towards a Healthy and sustainable commuting

Commuting from nearby places into cities is a major source of urban greenhouse gas emissions and the lack of sustainable mobility options heavily contributes to the problem. The GreenPATH project co-designs smart and green mobility options for students and employees together with mobility managers. More concretely, the partners develop a joint strategy for the integrated governance of commuter flows and draft action plans for functional urban areas. Innovative and collaborative solutions suggested in these plans will be tested and evaluated in three pilot areas.

About the project

GreenPATH is a project aimed at providing sustainable commuting solutions to students and employees in functional urban areas (FUAs) in Central Europe. The project is co-designed with mobility managers and targeted towards public and private stakeholders. It aims to develop smart and green mobility solutions through pilots, strategies, and action plans developed by 11 public administrations, mobility agencies and operators, universities, and research bodies, and 12 associated partners. The project focuses on addressing the challenges related to mobility management and commuting from home to work. The partners will develop a common strategy for the integrated governance of commuter flows in FUAs. They will deliver innovative solutions that can be scaled up in FUAs, leveraging new technologies and data-sharing platforms to optimize transport efficiency, improve the overall commuting experience, and provide commuters with real-time information, personalized travel options, and seamless integration of different modes of transport. GreenPATH will deliver practical solutions and action plans for a wide range of potential users, including local and regional public authorities, sectoral agencies, infrastructure, and (public) service providers, higher education and research organizations, schools, industrial and service companies, and related mobility management teams. The project outputs include three collaborative solutions for sustainable mobility, tested in three pilots deployed throughout FUAs, the GreenPATH Strategy, and seven action plans for each FUA. These outputs are expected to be endorsed by decision-makers, ensuring the take-up and further implementation of the solutions.

Roadmap

1

Context

The GreenPATH project takes place in functional urban areas (FUAs) across Central Europe and operates within the sustainable transportation sector.

2

Specific Problem

Driving into cities from nearby areas generates a significant amount of greenhouse gas emissions due to the lack of sustainable mobility options.

3

Our Idea

How can we use collaboration and innovative technology to develop sustainable commuting solutions and optimize transport efficiency in functional urban areas of Central Europe?

4

Our Solutions

Innovative, practical mobility management tools and action plans that can be applicable in the entire Programme Area.

User Survey Outcomes: Empowering stakeholders for a shared and sustainable mobility

To create greener and smarter ways of getting to work or university, we first needed to understand how people currently commute and what challenges they face. This survey, carried out in seven cities across Central Europe, asked students and employees about their daily travel habits, needs, and ideas for improvement. The results highlight what matters most to commuters and reveal key opportunities to make sustainable transport more attractive and accessible. These insights will help shape local actions and long-term strategies to support cleaner, more user-friendly mobility across the region.

GreenPATH MoU on a sustainable mobility management

The GreenPATH Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is a commitment to long-term collaboration between cities, institutions, and organizations across Central Europe. By joining forces, these partners aim to improve commuting and urban transport together, supporting the shared goals of the GreenPATH Strategy and helping create more sustainable and connected communities.

GreenPATH Strategy

The GreenPATH Strategy will offer a clear path to more sustainable commuting in Central Europe. It will focus on using data, technology, and local input to design practical solutions for students and workers. By tailoring actions to real needs, it will help cities and regions create greener, more efficient transport systems that work for everyone.
