TRANS-BORDERS+

Project overview

Innovative mobility solutions to enhance the attractiveness of public transport in border regions

Cross-border connectivity is crucial for people in peripheral areas. But they often lack efficient service and information on public transport links to regions across borders. The TRANS-BORDERS+ project targets this issue by introducing new services and digital information systems that help with planning public transport journeys in border regions. Project partners from five countries develop solutions like open journey planners that link travel information from different providers across national borders. Moreover, the partners digitalise rural transport stops to turn them into modern mobility hubs and pilot new cross-border mobility services.

Roadmap

1

Enhancing Mobility Across Borders

The project, TRANS-BORDERS+, focuses on implementing innovative mobility solutions to enhance public transport attractiveness in border regions, specifically targeting areas between Germany, the Czech Republic, Poland, Austria, Slovenia, and Italy. The project operates within the public transport sector, aiming to improve transport connections in rural and peripheral regions of Central Europe.

2

Bridging Borders: Connecting Rural Communities in Central Europe

TRANS-BORDERS+ sees the specific problem as the lack of efficient and attractive public transport connections in peripheral border regions of Central Europe, which negatively impacts connectivity, accessibility, and regional cohesion.

3

Idea for Better Cross-Border Connectivity

How can innovative digital solutions and cross-border cooperation be utilized to improve public transport connectivity and accessibility in peripheral border regions of Central Europe?

4

Innovative Cross-Border Mobility

The innovative solution will involve developing and implementing digital mobility solutions and upgrading public transport infrastructure to enhance cross-border connectivity and make public transport more efficient and attractive in Central Europe's peripheral border regions.

5

Working Solution

The solution will work by introducing open journey planners (OJP) that provide seamless cross-border travel information, enabling passengers to plan journeys across different countries effortlessly. Additionally, smart public transport stops will be upgraded with digital modules and services tailored to the specific needs of rural and peripheral areas, improving the overall passenger experience. Pilot projects in selected border regions will demonstrate the feasibility of these innovations, laying the groundwork for broader implementation and scaling across Central Europe.

6

Proven Impact

The partnership will implement four cross-border pilot actions, establish three transnational strategies, and develop four innovative solutions to improve public transport connectivity for at least 19 organizations across Central Europe, ultimately benefiting over 30% of the EU population living in border regions by providing more accessible, efficient, and sustainable transport options. These achievements will directly address the connectivity challenges in peripheral areas, enhancing accessibility and regional cohesion as envisioned by the project.

7

A Blueprint for Central Europe

The project will help transform border regions into vibrant, well-connected areas through innovative transport solutions. The partners are committed to expanding these successes across Central Europe, driving further regional integration and sustainable mobility.

Outputs

Transnational strategy on improvement of public transport in border regions

The transnational strategy focuses on improving cross-border public transport (PT) and facilitating access to the TEN-T network. Key elements include digital passenger information systems and innovative mobility points, designed to make sustainable transport more accessible and attractive. A major emphasis is placed on demand-responsive transport solutions to enhance regional accessibility. The strategy is complemented by tailored regional action plans, addressing the unique challenges and opportunities of each participating region. The development process involves close collaboration with experts and stakeholders, supported by a peer review system to ensure the integration of best practices and innovative solutions.

Smart bus stop toolbox

The Smart Bus Stop Toolbox focuses on transforming traditional bus stops into modern, multimodal mobility points across border regions. In the Lusatian border region with the Czech Republic, at least five stops will be prepared for funding, with applications submitted during the project to enable construction to begin. The toolbox will also be expanded to the Polish side and further refined in the DE/CZ border region. In the Liberec region, stops will be refurbished, and additional development will occur at the Carinthia-Slovenia (Koroska) border area. This innovative toolbox will provide a scalable and practical solution for enhancing cross-border public transport infrastructure in Central Europe.
